Creating Koauau!!

Jonas was back in our school teaching tamariki how to make - then play koauau. This was a wonderful experience for tamariki - lots of enjoyment to be had from using real tools to create their own instrument.

The koauau are made from bamboo - sawn to the length the tamariki want them - closed end or open - kei a tamaiti te tikanga. They sawed them then used sandpaper or the ground to smooth the edges. Next the drew where they wanted the hole for the koauau - some drilling - a little more filing then - their very own koauau!

Marvelous moustaches!

Marise made marvelous moustaches with everyone this week. 'M' has been our sound of the week. A tasty treat to have with our stories in the afternoon!

Music and movement

Wow! We are so lucky at Ōtaki School!! We had an amazing session with Jonas this week! Tamariki were able to explore a whole range of instruments safely (all blowing instruments wiped down in between students). Jonas works really well with the students - even when we are a small group! I hope you enjoy the videos! It was a very magical session!

The band!

Towards the end of the session we learnt a song together - we hope to perform this as a whole school by the end of term - everyone's health permitting.

Tāne, Tāne, Tāne mahuta e tu e tu,
Tāne, Tāne, Tāne mahuta e tu e tu,
Tāne mahuta te atua o te ngahere,
Tāne mahuta te atua o te ngahere.

Tēnā koe e Jonas, i tō kaha, i tō maia, i tō manawanui ki te whakaako i ngā tamariki o Ōtaki Kura!
He pai rawa atu tēnei wheako!
